The Last Network - Chapter 62
Tired but True
It was cheap, it was a cliché, but it would work. Rabbit remembered when his marriage was breaking up. He teetered on the edge of control, a cauldron of anger, everything a recrimination. He’d never run into Diana’s lover during that shitshow, but if he had, he’d have broken his jaw.
Frank was a cheater. Maybe he’d cleaned his act up since they worked together, but Rabbit doubted it. Once a poon hound, always a poon hound.
He’d gone north alone. His wife Alice, and two kids stayed behind in Beverly Hills. “Smallest house on the block,” he’d always say, “but we’re there for the schools”. He likely flew up on Mondays and came down on Thursdays. That left three long lonely nights. Now that he’d nailed Rabbit, Frank probably didn’t have anything to occupy his time. A man like that is going to get fidgety.
Frank liked doing speaking engagements. Industry shit, some mentoring, lessons from a life in technology. His LinkedIn showed three coming up. Two in the Bay Area. After a speech he liked to hit the lobby bar and hold court for a bit. Friends would come by and tell him what a good job he’d done. Rabbit had caught his act more than once, and it was always the same. That would be the time to hit him. Get some cute little thing. Smart looking, but sexy. The type Hollywood cast as the nerd. She’d have to be bright enough to talk the talk, but enough of a pro to trap him on tape.
After that, it was as simple as sending an anonymous attachment to Alice. She was not going to take that quietly. Frank would be out on the street, and he’d know just who set him up. All Rabbit needed to do after that was be in the right place at the wrong time. Somewhere public, somewhere Frank would lose it on him. Oh, he could see it now. An unhinged rant ending in a punch. Rabbit would go down like a pussy. He’d crumble in a heap whether Frank really connected or not.
Someone would tape that too. He’d get a restraining order, then file a second lawsuit. This one accusing Thorn Capital of a pattern of harassment. They set this whole thing in motion and look where it led. Rabbit fled to Mexico just to be able to work freely; he comes back for a weekend and then this happens?
Not a good look. Not a good look at all.
